Descriptions

As a Communications Supervisor you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of our community by overseeing all communications for Dickinson County's emergency services, including Law Enforcement, Police, Fire and EMS.  In this role, you will manage the receiving, recording, and dispatching of both emergency and non-emergency calls, operate and maintain the 911 emergency system, dispatch radios and computer systems, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards for emergency communication systems. You will provide leadership, support and training to communications staff to ensure efficient service delivery, and report directly to the Emergency Communications Director, coordinating closely to achieve departmental objectives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the County’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

ESSENTIAL SUPERVISORY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Comply with all countywide and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Directly supervise employees in the Emergency Communications Department.  
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the County’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Configure and administer various computer systems within the center.
  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned by the Director.
  • Assist the Training Coordinator to prepare and provide continuing education to existing staff.
  • Assign or cover shifts to keep both dispatch positions manned at all times.
  • Assist assigned staff with interpretation of the policies and procedures and provide direction when needed.
  • Receive, record and respond to requests for assistance from citizens, responders and outside agencies.
  • Dispatch personnel and equipment for various emergency services agencies.
  • Relay information to city and county service agencies.
  • Research and relay criminal history information.
  • Monitor and report inconsistencies in the performance of several vital computer and electronic systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in emergency situations.
  • Ability to concentrate on more than one conversation or task at a time.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to type with accuracy and moderate speed.
  • Ability to operate computers and other office equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret and write reports.
  • Ability to use good judgment to handle situations not specifically trained on.
  • Proper knowledge of grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using the English language.
  • Able to make independent decisions, use good judgment, accept results and receive constructive feedback in an appropriate positive manner.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing and able to work nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled or determined by the Communications Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be proficient with telecommunications equipment, dispatching software and 911 systems.

Qualified applicant cannot have any felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

Must be capable of mastering the essential knowledge, skills, and duties of the position and consistently perform them at a high level.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

3+ years of experience as a 911 Dispatcher or similar emergency communications role.

Must possess and maintain all required licenses and certifications for this position.
