Descriptions

The mechanic conducts both semi-skilled and skilled mechanical and technical work on Dickinson County-owned equipment and vehicles. The mechanic must provide own tools.  Some diagnostic equipment and major tools provided by Dickinson County. Responsibilities include performing necessary maintenance and repairs on all vehicles and equipment. The mechanic also manages inventory control of parts and supplies used in maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the role involves maintaining essential records such as maintenance logs, tracking equipment performance, and helping draft specifications for equipment purchases.



Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Comply with all countywide and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and perform repairs on trucks, tractors and all related construction equipment and vehicles.
  • Check and service related equipment on a regular basis.
  • Troubleshoot defective equipment and disassemble and replace defective parts.
  • Design and fabricate new equipment parts where applicable.
  • Maintain a clean and safe shop area.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Repair engines, transmissions, drive lines, brakes, and tires on vehicles.
  • Overhaul large diesel engines, gasoline engines and two-stroke engines.
  • Maintain accurate records on purchases, maintenance and repairs as performed.
  • Assist in writing equipment specifications.
  • Responsible for inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Responsible for pricing and ordering of parts and supplies.
  • Perform basic filing of paper records.
  • Answer telephone and radio as needed.
  • Maintain shop building and grounds.
  • Repaint vehicles and equipment.
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of safety operation of internal combustion engines and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment servicing, repairing, and mechanical operation.
  • Ability to assess and troubleshoot problems with equipment and take appropriate action to repair.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance needs by piece of equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CFC recycling.
  • Ability to understand the function and operation of every vehicle that is serviced.
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand vehicle wiring schematics/diagrams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with various equipment electrical and computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials safety.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure and repair manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Working knowledge of basic computers, the ability to operate a laptop and to use software programs to assess and read trouble codes with equipment where applicable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using the English language.
  • Skills in organization, mathematical processes, time management and a high degree of computer proficiency.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with others.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION

An Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year accredited college or technical school in the area of diesel mechanics.

Preferred three to five years related experience.

Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
