1. How do I test my phone to make sure you have my information correct?

Simply call the center in advance at 785-263-4041 and ask if you can conduct a 911 test call. The dispatcher will have you call 911 from your phone and check the information with you.

2. What should I do if I accidentally dial 911?

If this happens, do not hang up. Please stay on the line until we answer and can verify that it was a misdial. If you hang up, we are mandated to send a law enforcement officer to your residence to investigate the incident.

3. How do I find out about road conditions?

The State of Kansas has created a quick dial number which provides this information. Just dial 511 from your phone and follow the directions.

4. Who do I call to find out about school closings?

Check with your local TV and radio stations. These are the 1st entities notified in case of a school closing. The 911 center is not notified.

2. What is a county culvert?

Any culvert on a county road is maintained by the county. Culverts on township roads are maintained by the township unless they are have an opening that is 25 sq ft or larger. Then they are maintained by the county

A bridge is defined as a structure having a clear span of more than 20 feet. County bridges can be on township roads.

1. Does the Sheriff's Department pick up stray dogs?

If the animal is vicious or you have no vehicle available to transport the animal, we will pick it up. Otherwise, we ask that you transport the stray to the Abilene Animal Hospital. There is no charge to you by the Animal Hospital. The Sheriff’s Department pays all fees.

2. Do I have to call in if I want to do a controlled burn?

Yes, you should call (785) 263-4041 or 888-800-0417 before you light the fire and after the fire is out.

4. Has the Sheriff’s Department served certain papers/Are they trying to serve me papers?

Call (785) 263-4081 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

5. When is visitation at the jail, and who can visit?

Visitation is 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Only family members and one non-family member designated ahead of time may visit.
